Game Two: La Porte Bulldogs at Bellaire Cardinals

VIDEO SUMMARY AND REVIEW OF La Porte Bulldog vs Bellaire Cardinal Football Game.

La Portes game against Bellaire showed what the 2014 version of the Bulldogs was capable of – both good and bad.
FINAL SCORE: Bellaire Cardinal 31 La Porte Bulldogs 28

The bad first. Four fumbles lost – 2 on quarterback/center exchanges in the shotgun in the shadow of their own goal line; 1 on an exchange between the quarterback and running back deep in Bellaire territory and finally, a fumble out of the end zone after an amazing 80 yard run. Defensively, open field tackling was lacking as Bellaire ripped of big gains to sustain drives.

The good. Despite the turnovers the offense amazed 478 yards – 423 on the ground with 55 through the air. Quarterback Austin Upshaw - #5 ran for 239 yards while Britt Grant #24 added 180 yards. (Stats from Chron.com) Offensively things seemed to be working well IF … and that is a big if the Bulldogs were able to hang on to the ball. Defensively – it was either feast or famine. There was many sacks and tackles for losses. The linebacking crew stuffed the line of scrimmage and covered many short passes effectively. But lapses deep middle by the secondary and poor open field tackles lead to some big plays against the defense.

Taking nothing away from Bellaire. They had an exceptional dual threat quarterback and a great game plan. They won the game. I can remember a game or two when the Bulldogs came out victorious because of their other teams not playing up to their potential. I believe that was the case last night.

The Take Away from the Game? We are young in some key spots and while there are great plays – there are lapses due to inexperience. Those can be cleaned up, taught and learned from. I think that with the dual running threat of Upshaw and Grant couple with the receiving threat of Terrebonne the offense will be fine. With the penetration from the defensive line and solid play from the linebacking crew – I think the defense can be outstanding if open field tackling and deep middle secondary is improved.

The loss stung. But – after finding themselves down 17 to nothing mid-way through the first quarter – they battled back. They never gave up. They didn’t hang their heads. They didn’t implode. And if not for the fumble through the end zone after an 80 yard run – I believe the Bulldogs would have been victorious.

However – if frogs had wings they wouldn’t bump their butts when they land. (smile) The Boys fumbled away a game last night – but showed their heart – their brilliance – and their potential while battling back. It is still early. I expect great things from this team. The potential is there. The mistakes are fixable. The games will be winnable. I can’t wait for next week when our La Porte Bulldogs play Clear Springs Chargers at Bulldog Stadium. I am proud of these boys!!!
